A Long Long Time Ago

Hotmail was popular back then and even now. I was naive and immature and was not exposed and aware of other email domains. Hotmail was linked in the web browsers of the computers in the school labs and i meddled with it instead of listening to the teachings in class. That was how it all started. That was how streetfighter@hotmail.com was born. I still live to its name and reputation.

That is my email. Since secondary school. But it could have been primary school. I am not too clear. Anyway - many have come to ask and enquire about the story and tale behind that simple and straightforward yet unique and catchy username. No underscores and no numbers. Just one word. Just streetfighter and i like that. I think it is brilliant. I am lucky that the abovementioned username was available for my subscription. Thank God i was the first to pick. This email alone speak volumes about me and my history. It was a good choice and had stuck with me till current time. Some thought it was lame and got a laugh out of it while the more curious buggers dazed silently and pondered at its significance. Here is my explanation putting a stop to the inquisitive questions.

Before daddy got me my very first game console way back when i was still a budding little kid - i frequent the arcade a lot on weekends and sometimes after school. Especially the ones in Ginza Plaza at West Coast. Paco Funworld that stretched the top level was my second home which was pale in comparison to the tiny leased corner of some shoddy hub in the basement. Nonetheless they were my favourite hangouts only next to the one located in Jurong Entertainment Centre. Dollars were traded for credits to be inserted into that tiny slot of oblivion for a few minutes of fun and games and my favourite was - yes you guessed it - Street Fighter. I played all versions and i completed them. I was a champion and i had beaten some really tough players. I was very happy.

Until people started calling me Street Fighter. Not only because i spent countless hours and precious bucks from my pocket money and savings playing that violent and agressive game - but also because i started acting out the role in real life. I was not influenced by the game. I was just slightly triggered and got motivated to be the top fighter among my peers being had a martial arts background. I had a thirst for domination. I needed to rule. I fought aplenty and proved my worthy from the bottom pit all the way top to conquer the charts. Respect was due and earned. It got to my head till out of control. I was transferred from school to school but that is another story to tell. I participated in Street Fighting Competitions. Sometimes i win and sometimes i do not.
